the brits/blackout
saw "the brits" (the british version of the grammy except presented mtv award style) on thursday night. i've never much liked award shows but i guess i thought they might be different over here.
needless to say, i was wrong.
the first award they gave out was for the best song of the past 25 years. he nominees were "we are the champions" by queen, "love will tear us apart" by joy division and a bunch of awful songs by miserable brit-pop acts, including a song called "angel" by robbie williams.
now, i know that "we are the champions" is by no means the best british song of the past 25 years, nor even the best queen song, but it would have seemed to be the obvious choice given the options.
but, no.
no, the british people chose robbie "not good enough to even break the US pop charts or make any cultural impact whatsoever beyond his own rainy island and will be forgotten in 10 years" williams.
i had never heard the song before, so i suppose i shouldn't have jumped to any conclusions. hell, it could have been a good song right?
no.
he performed it later in the show.
it is an aggressively mediocre song, (i don't use that term often or lightly). aggressively.
the show continued much like this, though GSA grads franz ferdinand got an award or two. theyre real proud of those guys at this school, even the administration.
the power went out around 10:30, because mark (flatmate) hadn't paid for the electricity and we didn't know where he was. so i went to meet some people at the pub.
tomorrow i will be 21 years old, that's quite a few years
