on tv
i've been watching a bit of tv while i've been here and its pretty different from tv back in the states. it's got a different sort of sense of humor about it. many of the ads ("adverts") are very short and don't really tell you what they're selling, it'll just have some guy's name, the sound of falling water, and a still picture of a guy smoking for a few seconds and that'll be it. there's another one that i actually like that shows someone running in a field, after a while of this a voice asks "do you want to go faster?" then it flashes the name of a company (its a broadband company, broadband is pretty new over here). oh and there's this "advert" for the mini in which a naked elderly couple is driving along an isolated road, come up on another naked elderly man walking at the side of the road. the man in the passenger seat leans out of the car to hit the walker with a giant fish, but the walker gets him first.
on bbc 1 and 2 there aren't any "adverts" however, only those for the channel its self. people pay a yearly tv license for this.
one of the shows i've been watching regularly is celebrity big brother (happy, brandon?). jackie stallone (sylvester's ultra-creepy mother) was on it for a while and she was by far the only person i'd heard of before. they've had two surprise evictions so far. one took place during a game of hide and seek when big brother evicted the seeker and left the rest of the people hiding and didn't tell them, the other was immediately after a regularly scheduled eviction took place (by public vote via viewers' mobiles). now i must admit i've only seen one or two episodes of this in america but it seems they are much more sadistic here, trying to mess with the housemates.
in addition to being on every day, there are talk shows specifically about big brother and late at night they have celebrity big brother live during which its just a live video feed from the house, its boring when theyre asleep. actually, its boring all the time.
they also play very good movies on tv here, the french connection was on the other day as was "dusk til dawn" (which turned out to be pretty hilarious when it suddenly turned into a completely different movie half way through).
the picture on this post is from glasgow, it took it last weekend when i walked through kelvingorve park (though this is nowhere near the park). the park is one of the most dangerous yet most pretty parts of the city, i took some good pictures of it but i like this one better.
