gone german?/more tv
i'm off to berlin (until the 18th) then rome and venice (until the 25th) starting monday. the berlin trip is technically a class field trip so i guess there will be some class related activities, but i think that would just mean a visit to whatever modern art galleries there are, which i would do anyway. i'm pretty excited for this trip i have to say. bought another memory card so i can take more then 35 pictures which will be good.
unless i'm feeling particularly bloggy on monday morning this will be my last entry for about two weeks, i know the loyal 10-12 (estimated) regular visitors will be greatly saddened by this news.
now for another rant about british television:
yesterday was something they call "red nose day" in the uk. it's a day where people (mostly on tv i noticed) wear festive red noses or dye their hair red to support a charity called "comic relief". they give money to causes in africa and the uk.
so in honor of red nose day the bbc aired a variety-type show all last night, from about 6pm until mid night i guess (at least that's when i decided to watch clint eastwood in hang 'em high instead). part of the show was the results from "celebrity fame academy does comic relief" which was like american idol except with mid to minor british celebrities. thoroughly entertaining. mark (flatmate) and i have been watching most of the series. it's more like televised karaoke quality singing than anything professional, but thats the best part.
so we tuned in to see the results of fame academy which were going to be announced sometime within a 2 hour period of this larger celebrity gorged variety show. this turned out to be an emotionally whiplashing experience.
the whole concept of comic relief as an organization i guess is that they raise money through comedy to end tragic situations. so the show (with no commercials because it's the bbc) would repeatedly move from a light-hearted comday clip involving the mr. bean guy or the often amusing jimmy carr to a short, heart-wrenching, clip about african children being kidnapped and starving, parents dying from aids or the elderly being brutally abused. then just as suddenly as it moved to tragedy, graham norton was back on the screen with his witty sexually explicit chat.
i can only assume it went on like this for the entire night. i don't know how people's psyches could endure such swift and total manipulation. from the ab fab people to a sally-struthers-holding-sickly-african-child type clip (that explains the photo, huh) then back again.
i wish i had a job for the summer already.
